Choose the first workflow to automate—not the first AI tool

Start with work that is frequent, measurable and understood by the people doing it. Map the decision points, exceptions and hand-offs before selecting technology. The strongest candidates usually combine repetitive coordination with information that is already reasonably structured.

A useful first pilot has a visible owner, explicit human review points and a baseline for speed, quality and effort. Test the failure paths as deliberately as the happy path.

A practical selection check

Ask whether the workflow has:

• a clear start and finish;
• enough volume for improvement to matter;
• stable rules for normal cases;
• visible exceptions and escalation points; and
• an owner who can judge whether the result is useful.

The objective is not maximum automation. It is a dependable workflow that earns the confidence to scale.
